LCW's Christmas Symposium/Bazaar This Saturday, 12/20/14

Need some Christmas joy and break from shopping? Then join Lancaster Christian Writers for our year-end Christmas Symposium and Bazaar Saturday, December 20, 2014, at Lancaster Alliance Church, 210 Pitney Rd (off Hwy 30 across from Costco) from 9:30AM-12 noon ((registration opens at 9). Our fabulous guest speaker--YOU!!

Yes, as has become LCW tradition, our December meeting will showcase the creativity and genius of our own members. Share a poem, drama, devotional, even a scene of that novel. Time limit is 3-5 minutes (easy way to calculate is a maximum of 750 words), in order to permit as many to participate as possible. I do need an advance head count. SO please let me know if you want to participate so as to get you on the list.

Party food If you are baking any Christmas goodies or would like to contribute a brunch type dish, we'd love to make this a real party. If you think you can bring something, a heads-up would be nice just for planning. But last minute goodies will also accepted. (and if you have nothing to bring, don't let that discourage you from coming. There is always LOTS of food!)

Christmas Bazaar: AND if you have published titles or Christmas crafts, do bring them along for our Christmas Bazaar.  What better or more economic gift can you get for family member or friend than a personalized autographed title or craft. WHICH also means you may want to bring your checkbook and cash for shopping.

Critique Groups: We will be making time as well for our usual peer critique groups, so if you have that last piece you'd like critiqued before Christmas, bring 10 copies of up to 1500 words.

LCW Welcomes Author Shawn Smucker 11/15/14 PLUS Writers Contest & Course

Thanksgiving is around the corner and so is our November LCW meeting. Join us in welcoming well-known Lancaster area author and speaker Shawn Smucker on Saturday, November 15, 2014, at Lancaster Alliance Church, 210 Pitney Rd (off Hwy 30 across from Costco) from 9:30AM-12 noon ((registration opens at 9).

SPEAKER: Shawn Smucker is an author, blogger, and speaker who is passionate about storytelling and the importance of living an adventurous life. He has written five traditionally published books of non-fiction, ten self-published books of non-fiction, and is currently in the middle of releasing his first novel, The Day the Angels Fell, through a Kickstarter campaign. He received his English degree from Messiah College and currently lives in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, with his wife and four children. You can find him on Twitter, Facebook, and at shawnsmucker.com.

WORKSHOP: A Writer’s Quest”. For many writers the Holy Grail they are trying to discover is a life where they can make a living as a writer, spending their days in coffee shops or in a cabin overlooking a lake. Shawn Smucker has been making a living as a writer for the last five years, and it hasn't been all coffee shops and dreamy cabins. On Saturday, November 15th, he'll share with you his own story: the circumstances that led to him writing for a living, how he makes it work now, and the questions you need to ask yourself if making a living as a writer is your goal.

“PROMISING BEGINNINGS” CHRISTIAN WRITERS CONTEST:
Well-known editor and author Kathy Ide, founder and president of the Christian Editor Connection and Christian PEN, has invited LCW members to participate in the 3rd annual “Promising Beginnings” Christian Writers Conference. She sends this message to Lancaster Christian Writers members: “Because I believe in the power, impact, and influence of Christian writers’ conferences, and the Mount Hermon conference in particular, I am holding a contest in which the prize is a full scholarship to the 2015 Mount Hermon Christian Writers Conference (an $897 value). There is NO FEE to enter this contest. It is open to both published and unpublished writers, regardless of whether they've previously attended a Mount Hermon conference. Deadline to enter is November 30. Full details are on http://kathyide.com/contest/.”

LANCASTER BIBLE COLLEGE OFFERS ON-LINE CREATIVE WRITING COURSE: Many of you have enjoyed workshops taught by York area Christian suspense novelist Mike Dellosso. The following invitation just came in to LCW from the LBC communications department. “Lancaster Bible College is offering this fall a 6-week online course on Creative Writing, taught by Mike Dellosso.  The course can be done for credit– towards a degree or enrolled as non-degree seeking – or it can be audited with the potential for Continuing Education Units (CEUs) towards various available certificates.  Please visit https://www.facebook.com/LBCCreativeWriting to learn more about the course.

CRITIQUE GROUPS: And don't forget to bring your latest work-in-progress from this summer for critique groups (ten copies up to 1500 words).

Change of Speaker/Workshop for LCW This Saturday, October 18th!

Please note a last-minute change for our Lancaster Christian Writers this Saturday, October 18, 2014, at Lancaster Alliance Church, 210 Pitney Rd (off Hwy 30 across from Costco) from 9:30AM-12 noon ((registration opens at 9). Our scheduled speaker Kelly Long was taken to the hospital yesterday due to a serious concussion. She is recovering well, but will not be able to join us this Saturday. Please pray for complete healing for her. We hope to reschedule her workshop later in the year. Meantime, Jeanette Windle (yes, that's me!) will instead be teaching one of her most popular writers conference workshops: Hook That Editor!

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION: You have ten seconds to catch an editor’s attention, two minutes to keep it, so make that proposal count! A practical guide to writing a professional and attention-grabbing proposal. Offers clear explanation on how to write that all-important hook.

SPEAKER BIO: Award-winning novelist and missions journalist Jeanette Windle grew up in equatorial South America's guerrilla hot zones, has lived in six countries and traveled in more than 30. Those experiences have birthed 16 fiction titles, including bestselling Veiled Freedom, a 2010 ECPA Christian Book Award/Christy Award finalist, sequel Freedom's Stand, a 2012 ECPA Christian Book Award/Carol Award finalist, and Congo Dawn, 2013 Golden Scroll Novel of the Year.
